Two tv series about the Second World War: Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Same producers: Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

9 years of distance.

Only one war, but it seems to see two different wars. One in  Europe, one in the Pacific Ocean.

I have to say my opinion, I've loved more the first: Band of Brothers.

I don't know if it's because I'm european so it's more familiar, for the colors, nature, places. Or maybe for the story that I've found more intersting.

But for both of them I can say: great actors and spectacular visual effects. Scripts  studied in the minimum details. An exciting and touching stories.

Scenes in which you feel scared and terrified with these young guys in european woods, or in the slush of the small isles in the pacific.

Cause war is war wherewhere it is.

[Due serie tv sulla Seconda Guerra Mondiale: Band of Brothers e The Pacific. Stessi produttori: Steven Spielberg e Tom Hanks. 9 anni di distanza.

Una guerra soltanto, ma sembra di vedere due diverse guerre. Una in Europa ed una nel Pacifico.Se devo dirlo, io ho amato di più la prima: Band of Brothers.

Non so se è perchè sono europea quindi è più familiare, per colori, natura, posti. O forse per la storia che ho trovato più interessante. Ma per entrambe posso dire: grandi attori e spettacolari effetti visivi. Una sceneggiatura studiata nei minimi dettagli. Una storia emozionante e toccante. Scene in cui ti senti spaventata e terrorizzata insieme a quei giovani ragazzi nei boschi europei, o nella fanghiglia delle piccole isole nel pacifico. Perchè la guerra è guerra ovunque essa sia.

It could have been great! (...but it wasn't...)

...ALCATRAZ

As we promised in the post about canceled series (http://40-minutes.blogspot.it/2012/05/end.html) today we talk about ALACTRAZ:
The first question about Alcatraz is: JJ Abrams, what happened to you? We understand that after the end of his creature, LOST, maybe he has felt alone or "lost". It's the only explanation or justification that we've found.
The first 3 or 4 episodes caught our attention but after them you can stop and decide to watch another tv series, because you've understood too many things and mostly there are a lot of easy solutions in the script that it's impossible to believe that this is an Abrams' creation.
The main idea is very good but it's poorly developed, so our interest dropped after a few episodes and everything became too predictable.
Maybe after LOST we had too high expectations, but this was too much disappointing!
Second question: if in every episode there are only one or maybe two people from 1963, how many episodes and seasons did you planned to arrive at 302?? 

Now that it's been canceled, we will never know exactly what happened in 1963... Well.. actually we have understood everything already! We won't miss it.

[Come promesso nel post sulle serie cancellate (http://40-minutes.blogspot.it/2012/05/end.html) oggi parliamo di ALCATRAZ.

La prima domanda su Alcatraz è: JJ Abrams, cosa ti è successo? Noi capiamo che dopo la fine della sua creatura, LOST, forse si sia sentito solo o "perso". È la sola spiegazione o giustificazione che abbiamo trovato.
I primi 3 o 4 episodi hanno catturato la nostra attenzione, ma dopo di essi puoi fermarti e decidere di guardare un'altra serie tv, perchè hai capito troppe cose e soprattutto ci sono un sacco di soluzioni facili nella sceneggiatura che è impossibile credere che questa sia una creazione di Abrams.

L'idea principale è molto buona, ma sviluppata poveramente, così il nostro interesse è crollato dopo pochi episodi e tutto è diventato troppo prevedibile.

Forse dopo LOST avevamo aspettative troppo alte, ma questo è stato troppo deludente!

Seconda domanda: se in ogni episodio ci sono solo una o forse due persone dal 1963, quanti episodi e stagioni avevate programmato per arrivare a 302??

Ora che è stato cancellato, non sapremo mai esattamente cos'è successo nel 1963... Dunque.. veramente abbiamo già capito tutto! Non ci mancherà.

Women

...SEX AND THE CITY

We've a huge trouble writing a post about this tv series.

It's very difficult to find the right words to explain what this series has meant for us and for all the women who have watched it.

It was charming, glossy, funny. It was true, real, open. It was a mirror, or almost a mirror.

Our unconditional love for this show is not only for the way in which it showed women today. It showed also the problems they still live as women, at work, in bed, in relationships. It showed how they really are without social constructions. They are free and indipendent as much as they can.

And mostly it showed the real and unique friendship between 4 women. Every woman needs a friend as soul mate.

[Abbiamo avuto un enorme difficoltà a scrivere un post su questa serie televisiva.
E' stato difficile trovare le giuste parole per spiegare cosa ha significato questa serie per noi e per tutte le donne che l'hanno guardata.Era affascinante, patinata, divertente. Era vera,reale,aperta. Era uno specchio, o quasi uno specchio.Il nostro amore incondizionato per questo show non è solo per il modo in cui mostrava le donne oggi. Mostrava anche i problemi che ancora vivono come donne, a lavoro, nel letto e nelle relazioni. Mostrava come sono veramente, senza costruzioni sociali. Libere e indipendenti più che possono.E soprattutto mostrava la vera ed unica amicizia tra 4 donne. Ogni donna ha bisogno di un'amica come anima gemella.

characters to love: Niles Crane

...FRASIER

I can’t help talking about a sitcom I’ve always loved: FRASIER. It started as a spin-off of “Cheers” and it became one of the most successful spin-off.
Here I’d like to talk about my favourite character: I’m talking about Doctor Niles Crane of course, amazingly portrayed by David Hyde Pierce. I think he is one of the most funny characters I ever seen.. I love his moves, his lines, even his double-breast suits are perfect on this character: everything in this weird psychiatrist is hylarious.
To me the sitcom could have been named NILES... but I love Frasier too, together they form a perfect couple! Indeed I’m so glad to see again Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) in BOSS and I hope to see a new sitcom with David Hyde Pierce as the main character.

[Non posso fare a meno di parlare di una sitcom che ho sempre amato: FRASIER. È iniziata come uno spin-off di Cheers ed è diventato uno degli spin-off di maggior successo.
Qui vorrei parlare del mio personaggio preferito: sto parlando del Dottor Niles Crane ovviamente, interpretato in maniera straordinaria da David Hyde Pierce. Penso che sia uno dei personaggi più divertenti che io abbia mai visto.. Amo le sue movenze, le sue battute, anche i suoi abiti doppio petto sono perfetti su questo personaggio: tutto in questo strambo psichiatra è esilarante.
Per me la sitcom avrebbe potuto essere chiamata NILES… ma adoro anche Frasier, insieme formano la coppia perfetta! Infatti sono molto felice di rivedere Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) in BOSS e spero di vedere una nuova sitcom con David Hyde Pierce come protagonista.

soap opera or tv series?

 ...GOSSIP GIRL season 5

Finally is over.
It was so hard to keep on watching season 5..
Actually we arrived at the end for two reasons:
first - the location: new york city is the only thing in the series that is always beautiful
second (and most important) - we had to write this post!
During season 5 Gossip Girl looked like a soap opera, with a lot of unbelieveable events, predictable endings and the repetition of things happened a lot of times in the previous seasons.
Above all, we are disappointed by our favourite character: Blair Waldorf. Her religious devotion was like seeing her with a fake designer bag: it didn’t seem plausible at all. And what about when she thought that Chuck survived thanks to her vow?? Even Serena was smarter and told her that it wasn’t a miracle, it was modern medicine! But Blair is stubborn... this was the only consistent thing.
Eventually she was able to break up with Louis and what did she do? She started a relation with Dan Humphrey!!!!! That was the most unbelievable thing.. If we had a column named “worst couple ever” they would have won the first prize.
But in the last episode we are not surprised to learn that truth is she still loves Chuck.. That was so predictable but they had to do it of course. And what happened?? Chuck refused her! Please understand that this love story starts to be boring.... If you are not able to create other stories stop it!
But the worst thing was of course something that you can see only in the most dramatic telenovela: the resurrection of a dead man!
We complete simply by saying: we hope the next and last season will be better, otherwise they can stop it now.

[Finalmente è finita.

E' stata dura continuare a guardare la quinta stagione..

In realtà siamo arrivate alla fine per due ragioni:

primo - la location: new york city è l'unica cosa nella serie che è sempre bellissima

secondo (e più importante) - dovevamo scrivere questo post!

Durante la quinta stagione Gossip Girl è sembrata più una soap opera, con un sacco di eventi incredibili, finali prevedibili e la ripetizione di cose successe un sacco di volte nelle preccedenti stagioni.

Soprattutto, siamo deluse dal nostro personaggio preferito: Blair Waldorf. La sua devozione religiosa è stata come vederla con una una finta borsa firmata: non sembrava proprio plausibile. E che dire di quando lei pensava che Chuck fosse sopravvissuto grazie al suo voto?? Persino Serena fu più intelligente e le disse che non era un miracolo, era la medicina moderna! Ma Blair è ostinata.. questa è stata l'unica cosa coerente.
Alla fine lei poteva rompere con Louis e che cosa ha fatto? Ha iniziato una relazione con Dan Humphrey!!!!! Questa è stata la cosa più incredibile.. Se avessimo una rubrica chiamata "le peggiori coppie di sempre" loro avrebbero vinto il primo premio.
Ma nell'ultimo episodio non siamo sorpresi di apprendere che la verità è che lei ama ancora Chuck.. Questo era proprio prevedibile ma dovevano farlo ovviamente. E cosa è successo?? Chuck l'ha rifiutata! Per favore capite che questa storia d'amore inizia ad essere noiosa... Se non siete in grado di creare altre storie fermatevi!
Ma la cosa peggiore è stata ovviamente qualcosa che potete vedere solo nelle più drammatiche telenovele: la risurrezione di un uomo morto!
Completiamo semplicemente dicendo: speriamo che la prossima e ultima stagione sarà migliore, altrimenti possono interrompere adesso.

The end

In these days the tv broadcast networks have canceled some tv series, old or new.

Here a list and a judgement:
Alcatraz: I'll write soon a post about it, but it was a good idea to cancel it.
The finder: spin off of Bones. It's a little bit surreal but nice. Nothing compared to Bones.
The firm: a good rhythm and a wonderful Juliette Lewis, but we won't miss it.
Awake: a good series, a fantastic script. Too bad!
Unforgettable: the script was very interesting, the actors were good. They could have produced another season.
Pan Am: did they really think to be the new "Mad Men"? Not even in the dresses. It's an excellent choice to cancel it.
The playboy club: only 3 episodes. Another great idea.
About the older:
CSI Miami: it's time to close also for the other 2 (Las Vegas and New York).
Dr House: they should have done it 3 seasons ago.
Desperate Housewives: they should have done it 4 seasons ago.
Chuck: I've loved this tv series but at the 5th season it was time to put an end.
Harry's law: nothing to say about Kathy Bates, but this series was the new version of The Practice or Boston legal. We already knew David E. Kelly loved tv series about lawyers.

Ecco una lista e un giudizio:
Alcatraz: scriverò un post su di essa, ma è stata un'ottima idea cancellarla.
The finder: lo spin off di Bones. un po' surreale ma carino. Niente di paragonabile a Bones.
The firm: un buon ritmo ed una splendida Juliette Lewis, ma non ci mancherà.
Awake: un'ottima seria, una sceneggiatura fantastica. Peccato!
Unforgettable: la scenggiatura era interessante, gli attori bravi. Avrebbero potuto fare un'altra stagione.
Pan Am: veramente pensavano di essere i nuovi "Mad Men"? Nemmeno negli abiti. Scelta eccellente quella di cancellarla.
The playboy club: solo 3 episodi. Un'altra grande idea.
A proposito delle vecchie:
CSI Miami: è tempo di chiudere anche per le altre 2 (Las Vegas e New York).
Dr House: avrebbero dovuto farlo 3 stagioni fa.

Chuck: ho amato questa serie ma alla quinta stagione era tempo di mettere una fine.
Harrys law: niente da dire su Kathy Bates, ma questa serie era una nuova versione di The Practice o di Boston Legal. Sapevamo già che David E. Kelly amasse le serie sugli avvocati.

Enough

...GIRLS

I’ve watched only two episodes, but I already know that I don’t like this new tv series, even if it is on air on HBO.

The first reason cause I reject “Girls”: to set in New York another tv series with 4 girls. Enough is the right word to explain what I think.

Second of all, I agree these girls have nothing to share with Carrie&Co. They are more younger therefore have different issues but you can already see that these girls never will be as Carrie&Co, ever.

Third of all, they have decided to produce another tv series with 4 girls in New York but very different from “Sex & and the city” (25 years old and not 30, Brooklyn and not Manhattan) to break away from it, but the mistake paradoxically is this one, because just in the first 2 episodes you can see how they represent the girls nowadays. I don't agree and I don’t like it.

[Ho visto solo due episodi, ma già so che questa nuova serie non mi piace, anche se è sulla HBO. La prima ragione per cui boccio “Gilrs”: ambientare l’ennesima serie con 4 ragazze a New York. Basta è la parola giusta per esprimere ciò che penso. Secondo poi, sono d’accordo che queste ragazze non hanno niente a che vedere con Carrie&Co; sono più giovani quindi hanno problemi diversi ma si può già vedere che non saranno mai come Carrie&Co, mai. Terzo, hanno deciso di produrre un’altra serie con 4 ragazze a New York però molto diversa da “Sex & and the city” (25 anni e non 30, Brooklyn e non Manhattan) per allontanarsene, ma l’errore paradossalmente è questo, perché già nel primi 2 episodi si può vedere come sono rappresentate le ragazze di oggi. ...SHAMELESS (US version)

Quite recently we totally fell in love with a new series: SHAMELESS (US version)

I’m sure we are going to post a lot about it, so now I’m going to write only about one character that I adore: Sheila Jackson, perfectly portrayed by Joan Cusack.

Sheila seems to be the perfect housewife and an excellent cook, but she is also an agoraphobic and germophobe woman, who never leaves her house and has a lot of other strange habits it’s better not to investigate...

[Abbastanza di recente ci siamo completamente innamorate di una nuova serie: SHAMELESS (versione USA).. Sono sicura che posteremo un bel po’ su di essa, così io ora scriverò solo di un personaggio che adoro: Sheila Jackson, perfettamente interpretata da Joan Cusack.
Sheila sembra la perfetta casalinga e una cuoca eccellente, ma è anche una donna agorafobica e che ha paura dei germi, che non lascia mai la sua casa e ha un sacco di altre strane abitudini che è meglio non approfondire…

...WILL&GRACE

One of the most funny and smart sitcom of the last 20 years, Will&Grace made us laugh for 8 seasons, and I’ve always thought that the right title would have been “Will&Grace&Karen&Jack”, because in many situations Karen and Jack were the real main character.

Certainly in 8 seasons a lot of absurd things have happened, and maybe the last season wasn’t the best, but also today if I watch an episode on tv I laugh as if it was the first time, I never tire of this sitcom.

I also think that the use of movie or tv stars (as in “Friends”, of which we’ll discuss very soon) was a wonderful idea e made the show more interesting, cause the audience could look these people often play ridiculous roles.

One of the best series ever? Why not!

[Una delle più divertenti ed intelligenti sitcom degli ultimi venti anni, Will&Grace ci ha fatto ridere per otto stagioni, ed ho sempre pensato che il giusto titolo sarebbe dovuto essere “Will&Grace&Karen&Jack”, perché in molte situazioni Karen e Jack erano i personaggi principali.
Certamente in 8 stagioni sono successe molte cose assurde, e forse l’ultima stagione non è stata la migliore, ma ancora oggi se guardo un episodio in tv rido come se fosse la prima volta, non sono mai stanca di questa serie.
Penso anche che l’utilizzo di star del cinema o della tv (come in “Friends”, di cui parleremo molto presto) è stata un’idea fantastica e ha reso lo show più interessante, perché il pubblico ha potuto guardare queste persone in ruoli ridicoli. Una delle migliori serie di sempre? Perchè no!

characters to love: Joan Holloway

...MAD MEN

It’s not a coincidence that we choose a woman as favorite character in a tv show in which the chauvinism is in charge. At the beginning we had the feeling that Joan was just another secretary, her boss’ mistress, beautiful woman who didn’t care of other girls in the same office. Then we’ve understood she is much more. She’s a woman that wants a family and a man who loves her and takes care of her, like every single woman in those years, maybe in all years. But she’s not only that and she doesn’t want just that.

She is an independent woman who works because she wants to do it, to have her chance to make better things in her small world (Mad Men’s office), to feel important, satisfied and estimated.

She prefers to grow up his son alone rather then to continue to be married with a man who does not regard her, who has made violence to her, a man who doesn’t deserve her.

So, we love Joan cause she is a woman that lives like a woman and does not try to live and to behave like a man.

[Non è una coincidenza che scegliamo una donna come nostro personaggio preferito in un programma televisivo in cui regna il maschilismo. Al principio avevamo la sensazione che Joan fosse solo un’altra segretaria, amante del suo capo, una donna bellissima a cui non importava delle altre ragazze nel suo stesso ufficio. Poi abbiamo realizzato che lei è molto di più. È una donna che vuole una famiglia e un uomo che la ami e che si prenda cura di lei, come ogni donna single di quegli anni, o forse di sempre. Ma non è soltanto questo e non vuole soltanto questo.

È una donna indipendente che lavora perché vuole farlo, per avere la possibilità di migliorare le cose nel suo piccolo mondo (l’ufficio di Mad Men), per sentirsi importante, soddisfatta e stimata.

Preferisce crescere suo figlio da sola piuttosto che continuare a essere sposata con un uomo che non la rispetta, un uomo che le ha usato violenza, un uomo che non la merita.

Quindi amiamo Joan perché è una donna che vive come una donna e che non prova a vivere e a comportarsi come un uomo.

Since some tv series have beautiful openings, we want to share with you those one we like the most.

United States of Tara opening is certainly very nice: a pop-up book shows us all Tara's alter ego.

 

[Dato che alcune serie hanno delle bellissime sigle, vogliamo condividere con voi quelle che ci piacciono di più. La sigla di United States of Tara è sicuramente molto carina: un libro pop-up ci mostra tutti gli alter ego di Tara.]

60s styles

...MAD MEN

As you might have understood, we really love Mad Men.
I think it’s worth seeing it even only for the costumes.. They are so beautiful that each time I watch an episode I see something I would like to wear.
But Mad Men not only shows us 60s fashion, it shows us different ways to wear 60s fashion. In fact different women have differet styles, as in real life.

The first one is obviously our favourite character Joan Holloway. She is a woman with curves who knows how to emphasize them, but always with grace and class. Her hairstyles are always amazing too.
Mad Men’s authors never make mistakes: Joan is a secretary, so she cannot afford to buy lots of jewels, but she has one piece (a beautiful necklace) that she wears with different dresses. I love this kind of details.

The second one is Betty Francis (formerly Draper). She is more elegant and always perfect, she likes to show her position through her dresses.

Her favourite piece is a dress composed of a blouse and a large skirt, with a belt that accentuate her tiny waist. She owns this kind of dress in different colors and fabrics.. and she’s right: she is perfect when she wears one of them.
Please notice Betty going out of the clinic when she gave birth to her last son.. (I wasn’t exactly dressed the same way after giving birth to my daughter.. ;-)
And now in season 5 Betty is fat... how will she deal with this problem?? It won’t be easy for her..

The third style is Peggy Olson’s. She is more serious and sober: first af all she hasn’t the same curves of the previous women, and moreover she is a working and independent woman and she is really proud of it.

Her favourite piece is the neckerchief.. and with it she is perfect too.

There is also another rising star in Mad Men women: Don Draper’s new wife Megan. She wears those beautiful short dresses that are perfect on a young lady with those legs.
We expect to see a lot of beautiful outfits on Megan during season 5...

..Did I use the word “perfect” too many times talking about this dresses??

[Come avrete capito, noi adoriamo Mad Men.
Penso che valga la pena vederlo anche solo per i costumi.. Sono così belli che ogni volta che guardo un episodio vedo qualcosa che vorrei indossare.
Ma Mad Men non solo ci mostra la moda degli anni 60, ci mostra differenti modi di indossare la moda degli anni 60. Infatti donne diverse hanno stili diversi, come nella vita reale.
La prima è ovviamente il nostro personaggio preferito Joan Holloway. E' una donna con delle curve che sa come valorizzare, ma sempre con eleganza e classe. Anche le sue acconciature sono sempre fantastiche.
Gli autori di Mad Men non commettono mai errori: Joan è una segretaria, quindi non può permettersi di comprare molti gioielli, ma ha un pezzo (una bellssima collana) che indossa con vari vestiti. Adoro questo tipo di dettagli.
La seconda è Betty Francis (ex Draper). Lei è più elegante e sempre perfetta, le piace mostrare la sua posizione attraverso i suoi vestiti.
Il suo pezzo preferito è un vestito composta da camicetta e gonna larga, con una cintura che accentua la sua vita sottile. Possiede questo tipo di vestito in diversi colori e tessuti.. e ha ragione: è perfetta quando ne indossa uno.
Per favore notate Betty che esce dalla clinica quando è nato il suo ultimo figlio.. (io non ero esattamente vestita allo stesso modo dopo la nascita di mia figlia.. ;-)
E ora nella quinta stagione Betty è grassa.. come affronterà questo problema?? Non sarà facile per lei..
Il terzo stile è quello di Peggy Olson. Lei è più seria e sobria: innanzitutto non ha le stesse curve delle altre, e inoltre è una donna lavoratrice e indipendente e ne è fiera.
Il suo pezzo preferito è il foulard.. e con quello anche lei è perfetta.
C'è anche un'altra stella nascente fra le donne di Mad Men: la nuova moglie di Don Draper, Megan. Indossa dei bellissimi vestiti corti che sono perfetti su una giovane donna con quelle gambe.
Ci aspettiamo di vedere un sacco di bellissimi vestiti su Megan durante la quinta stagione...
..Ho usato la parola "perfetto" troppe volte parlando di questi vestiti??

Instead in this post we want to share with you how much we had hated and had found unacceptable and ridiculous Ugly Betty’s finale. After 4 seasons, of which only the first two were noteworthy, this is the finale of the entire tv series?

Invece in questo post vogliamo condividere con voi quanto abbiamo odiato e trovato inaccettabile e ridicolo il finale di Ugly Betty. Dopo 4 stagioni, di cui solo le prime due degne di nota, questo è il finale dell'intera serie?
